From the Publisher
Welcome to the 21st anniversary issue of Transitions Abroad. When I put the first issue together in May 1977 I had in mind a source of practical, factual information
for travelers like myself — people whose purpose in travel is to understand and learn from the culture and natural history of the places they visit, and not to alter either.
"Transitions" means changes, movement from one place to another. But the important and exciting changes that occur when we travel are those that take place
in our minds — when we let go of our prepackaged ideas and prejudices and embrace the far richer experience of meeting and accepting new people, places, and cultures on their own terms.
Unlike other travel magazines, we have information for everyone — from teenage travelers, to seniors, to independent-minded travelers of every age and interest who travel
for more than just the sites (of the shopping).
We hope you find the details you need to do it your way — and there are lots of details: in the magazine, on our huge website, in our newsletter, in our special resource
guides, in the Alternative Travel Directory, in Work Abroad, and in the 21 years' worth of back issues available from our database.
Next time: Our big annual Overseas Travel Planner in which the editors select, by country, the best travel information — guidebooks, organizations, websites, and individual
contacts — for every kind of traveler.
If you can't wait, contact us, Happy Transitions!
